Overview
The Langtang and Helambu section of Nepal's Great Himalayan Trail offers a mesmerizing journey through the Langtang National Park, renowned for its spectacular mountain vistas, diverse flora, and fauna. This section encompasses the Langtang and Helambu regions, presenting trekkers with breathtaking landscapes, including towering peaks, lush forests, and picturesque valleys. One of the highlights of this section is Langtang Lirung, standing tall at 7,227 meters, dominating the skyline with its majestic presence. Additionally, the trek passes over into Langtang via the challenging 5,308-meter Tilman Pass, offering stunning views extending all the way into Tibet. Throughout the journey, trekkers encounter vibrant Tamang, Lama and Hyolmo villages, providing insight into the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Langtang National Park was established in 1976 as Nepal's first Himalayan national park and the country's fourth protected area. Extending over parts of Nuwakot, Rasuwa, and Sindhupalchok districts it is linked in the north with Qomolangma National Nature Preserve (TAR China) while its eastern and western boundaries follow the Bhote Koshi and the Trishuli River, respectively.
The park covers an area of 1,710 km2 (660 sq mi) and serves as the nearest national park to the country's capital, Kathmandu. The Park is said to represent a meeting point between Indo-Malayan and Palearctic realms and holds a rich biodiversity. It has a remarkable diversity of 14 flora types in its different 18 ecosystems ranging from upper tropical forests below 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) altitude to alpine scrub and perennial ice. The park landscape consists of mountain peaks, glaciers, high altitude lakes, rivers, pastures, and forests and is home to 46 species of mammals, including red panda, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, wild dog, goral, serow and more than 345 species of birds, and 30 species of fishes. Three main trek routes -Langtang Valley, Helambu and Gosaikunda Lake cover much of the Langtang National Park and the southern Helambu region.
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is situated on the northern fringe of Kathmandu Valley and is a haven of natural beauty and biodiversity amidst urban surroundings. Established in 2002, the park covers an area of 159 square kilometres, making it the ninth national park in Nepal. Named after the Shivapuri and Nagarjun hills that it encompasses, the park offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. The park is characterized by lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Its diverse ecosystems support a wide range of flora and fauna, including over 300 species of birds and 19 species of mammals such as the Himalayan black bear and leopard.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park offers a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging treks along with the opportunities for birdwatching. The popular Shivapuri Peak trek provides stunning vistas of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding mountains, while the Nagarjun Hill hike offers a peaceful retreat with opportunities for meditation. Cultural attractions within the park include the Nagi Gompa, a revered Buddhist site, and the Bagdwar area, the source of the sacred Bagmati River.
