Overview

The Rara and Jumla section of the Great Himalayan Trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance. Anchored by Rara Lake, Nepal's largest lake situated at an altitude of 2,990 meters and often described as 'a shimmering blue jewel set in a ring of snowy peaks,' this section is a visual delight. The surrounding Rara National Park, with its ancient forests of blue pine, spruce, and cedar, serves as a sanctuary for a variety of migratory birds.

The nearby Sinja Valley, a historical treasure, is where the earliest examples of Nepali script were found, dating back to the 13th century. This area, once the capital of the Malla kingdom, features remnants of ancient temples and Malla stones inscribed with images of the sun and moon.

Culturally, the region is a fascinating mix of Hindu, Buddhist, and shamanic practices, visible in the local customs, dress, and architecture. The trail also intersects with historic trade routes, including the salt route to Humla and the ancient royal highway leading to Nepal's far west. The area is known for its beautiful rice terraces, particularly the high-altitude red Kala Marci rice fields.

This section is perfect for adventurers seeking authentic cultural experiences, historical exploration, and stunning natural landscapes, all within a serene and less-travelled setting.

Rara National Park, established in 1976, is located in the remote northwestern part of Nepal, covering parts of Mugu and Jumla districts. As the smallest national park in Nepal, covering an area of 106 square kilometres, it is renowned for its pristine natural beauty and ecological significance. The park's centrepiece is Rara Lake, the largest lake in Nepal, also known as "Mahendra Lake." Situated at an altitude of 2,990 meters (9,810 feet). The park is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 bird species recorded. Notable birds include the Himalayan monal (Nepal's national bird), Impeyan pheasant, and various species of eagles, hawks, and waterfowl.

The park is culturally rich, with local communities primarily following Tibetan Buddhism. The region's traditional lifestyle, customs, and festivals add to the cultural heritage of the park. Visitors can experience the warm hospitality and unique traditions of the local people, providing a cultural dimension to the natural beauty of the park.

Reaching Rara National Park involves a combination of flights and trekking. The nearest airports are in Talcha and Jumla, from which visitors can embark on a trek to the park.
